Selfsustainability Onboard and Recycling

As an ecoconscious project, , we try as much as possible to limit our environnmental footprint through our travels. Already, by living on a boat, it is important to be conscious of our consumption limited capacities. We also try to experiment selfsustainability on a limited space like a boat by having a little garden, making sprouts and power recycling goods onland.



By having limited water supplies when sailing, we cook with salt water when possible, we brush teeth with salt water, reuse the water of our sprouts for watering the garden, etc. We also try to develop efficient rainwater retention systems and have water makers (a pump that desalinizes the ocean water).



All of the energy we use is produced by our solar panels. On Starseeker and Toango, there is not what is sometimes considered onland like basic household appliances like a fridge, a television, a washing machine or a heater, these sometimes require more energy and then a generator is needed. Not having a fridge makes us discover new ways to conserve foods.



We try to grow our own food on a quite limited space, Starseeker left Panama city with a little garden aboard, we had two tomato plants, basil and oregano plants, aloe vera, few young medicinal plants. Unfortunately plants dont really like salty environnement and we lost some of them during the crossing. We also make sprouts (lentils, mung beans, alfalfa, fenugreek, brocoli, etc.) to have access to some fresh and crunchy vitaminy goods on a long term crossing, where after a whille the only veggies left are potatoes and onions.



On land we take the opportunities to recycle as much as possible, materials but also food. In a system of high consumerism, there is a lot of waste that are highly reusable. In Panama city for example, we we going at least twice a week a the biggest fruit market of the city sometimes playing music for the workers sometimes just going to recycle fruits and veggies of second quality, because people will pay for the best quality fruit, an apple with a bruise will be thrown away. We are usually able when we have access to land to recycle fruits, vegetables and bread, sometimes more. We also play music for food in the markets asking the ones in least conditions. In big city, the amount of 'treasure trash' is incredible, this is why we took the occasion in Panama city to  build a solar dryer on wich we dried  for over 10 pounds of fruits and vegetables for the crossing, only with the power of the sun! Everything we tried to dry worked, carrot, yuca, tomato, mango, pineapple, etc. The solar dryer was built with wood and vines found on the site, the only thing we bought is the plastic and the screen.
